Yemen: Monthly Situation Report No. 5 (September 2018)

Humanitarian Context:
Fighting has escalated in the eastern and southern areas of Al Hudaydah city, rendering the main road to the capital, Sana’a, inaccessible to humanitarian partners. Civilian casualties have been reported and infrastructure has been damaged. Fighting was also reported in the districts of Bait al Faqih, and At-Tuhayat, particularly in the Al Jah and Jabaliya areas, and in Hays.
Fighting between various groups decreased in Taizz city as parties to the conflict relocated heavy weapons and fighters to frontlines outside the city. However, civilian casualties were reported from landmines and shelling, including two civilians who died when a landmine detonated on the road between Hayfan District and Lahj Governorate.
During the reporting period, armed clashes were reported in Hayfan and Maqbanah districts in Taizz Governorate, hampering the humanitarian response particularly in Hayfan where there were recurrent clashes and there is landmine contamination. In Ibb Governorate, the situation remained relatively calm. Taizz, Hajjah, Amanat al Asimah, Ibb and Amran governorates recorded the highest displacement figures – over 25,000 households each – while Aden, Amanat al Asimah and Taizz had the highest number of returns,making them areas of both displacement and return. In Al Hudaydah, over 300,000 people are estimated to have been displaced by the escalated conflict.
As of 15 September, more than 73,500 displaced households had been registered in Aden, Al Hudaydah, Sana’a, Ibb and Sa’ada hubs, of whom nearly 70,000 of them had received rapid response assistance and non-food items.
