Yemen – Conflict (DG ECHO, UN, INGO’s) (ECHO Daily Flash of 11 March 2019)

  • In 2019, over 10 000 people have been displaced to Abs, Aslem and surrounding districts due to ongoing fighting, bringing the total number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Hajjah governorate to 420 000. The continued displacement in Hajjah necessitated the immediate scaling up of the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) response to meet the needs of the current and newly arriving IDPs and vulnerable communities, calling for a comprehensive coordinated inter-sector response to displacement.
  • The Education Cluster reports that, in the course of the conflict, 256 schools have been destroyed and 1 520 damaged by armed conflict, and 23 are currently occupied by armed groups. Unpaid and insufficient teacher salaries are another serious challenge and have resulted in teachers striking and leaving the profession to find alternative employment.
  • In recent weeks, DG ECHO assessed the situation through monitoring missions in Hajjah, Hodeidah and Ibb governorates. The missions noted significant lack of sanitation services and very often below standard conditions for IDPs and vulnerable host communities.
