Yemen – COVID-19 (DG ECHO, UN, Johns Hopkins University, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 6 May 2020)

  • COVID-19 is spreading further in Yemen. On 5 May, 22 cases were formally notified by the UN. However, the Johns Hopkins University database reported a total of 3 deaths so far.
  • In the north, the Minister of Health announced a first COVID-19 case in Sana’a, seemingly concerning a Somali refugee. This raises additional protection concerns for migrants and refugees, as xenophobia against these groups is already high across the country. In the south, COVID-19 is spreading through community level transmission with the governorates of Hadramaut, Lahj, Aden and Taiz as focal points.
  • The pipeline of COVID-19 supplies is suffering delays and bottlenecks, particularly for cargo arriving to de facto Authorities controlled areas.
